BY THE SWORD is the twelfth in the Repairman Jack series. It closely follows the events in BLOODLINE.
Jack is still looking for Dawn Pickering, daughter of a former client, that has dropped out of sight, and is pregnant with a super tainted child, loaded with junk genes known as oDNA.
He’s hired to find a stolen katana, an ancient japanese sword found intact at ground zero-Hiroshima after WWII, mostly intact, only looking ratty after surviving a nuclear explosion. In the course of the hunt, Jack learns he’s only one of four looking for both the sword and Dawn. The Yakuza( japanese Mafia), an obscure Japanese cult thought wiped out in Hiroshima, and the Kickermen, another cult(responsible for the pregnant Dawn) are the others.
What is the interest in the old sword? In the baby? These are questions Jack wants answered.
It all ties in to Wilson’s Secret History of The World. At this point, we are about seven months from Year Zero, about a year from the events of the previously published NIGHTWORLD, the sixth book in the Adversay Cycle.
The first Jack book, THE TOMB, was second in that series and, at the time it was written, there were no plans for more. Eighteen years passed before the second was published. As the whole sequence is in a narrow time frame, he updated THE TOMB and expects to heavily revise NIGHTWORLD before the end. He saya there should only be four or five more Jack novels, not counting the trilogy about Jack’s formative years(JACK: SECRET HISTORIES has already been published).
I’m enjoying these books and am always happy to see a new one. I haven’t read the rest of the Adversary Cycle, so I suppose I need to get to those. The books make sense without having read them, though, as any good series should.
If you like urban fantasy/horror and haven’t tried these, I highly recommend these.
