Green Lantern: First Flight is an animated movie just out. This is the Hal Jordan version, not the earlier or later editions, the one with which I’m most familiar. He’s my second favorite DC character after Batman. I know, it’s heretical not to have Superman in the top two. Sorry. While I like the character, I always thought he was a bit to powerful for my tastes.

First Flight is the classic story of how Hal Jordan become a Lantern, one of the policemen of the universe. He is drawn by the ring to the wreckage of Abin Sur’s space ship to take over the power as the most worthy human. After Abin Sur’s death, the ship self destructs, destroying all evidence of his being on Earth.
Almost immediately, Jordan is attacked by a group of Lanterns, including Sinestro(as every good Lantern fan knows, Jordan’s greatest enemy; but not yet). He is taken to Oa to face the immortal Guardians and justify why he should wear the ring. There is resistance to the idea(after all, he is human) at first until Sinestro volunteers to be his mentor.
Jordan and Sinestro go looking for Abin Sur’s killer, Jordan witnessing at close hand his mentor’s brutality and contempt for the Guardians.
Someone has discovered the hiding place of the yellow element, the only weakness of the Lantern rings. Of course, all Green Lantern fans know who is ultimately behind everything. But that doesn’t spoil the fun. I promise you.
I really enjoyed this one and I see a live action version is coming in 2011. I’ll be looking out for that one as well.
