John Scalzi began his blog Whatever(so named because he wrote about whatever crossed his mind) in 1998 before the term blogging had even been thought up. It was an online diary. He just won a Hugo for best related book at the most recent Worldcon in Montreal.

It’s filled with posts culled from ten years of posting, though in no particular order. The topics cover a wide range: politics, family, writing, religion, advertising. Scalzi is not shy about his opinions, but he is fair minded in reporting on all things he disagrees with, especially in politics or religion. He will tell you that he cares not one whit what people, excepting friends and family, think of him. The title of the book comes from a post detailing the best way to send him hate mail. He will be impressed by originality and intelligence in your screeds against him

It’s a very entertaining book and enabled me to catch up on some older posts. I only discovered him, his blog, and his books a few years ago. The books are fun to read and the blog is a daily stop for me. I never fail to be entertained.

If you haven’t read Whatever, I encourage you to check it out. You can tell he loves his family, as Krissy, the Mrs, and Athena, daughter, figure quite prominently in many of the posts. Not to mention the three cats and the dog.

And the photoshopped cover is hilarious.
