The morons were loose in North Carolina today at the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards, the ex-wife of politician John Edwards. She lost her battle with cancer on Tuesday and the family wasn’t allowed a peaceful ceremony. They were picketed by the controversial Westboro Baptist Church out of Kansas, that church, and I use the word loosely, run by a man named Phelps, a group of seventy members, chiefly Phelps’ children, grandchildren, and in-laws, that target military and other important funerals with their anti-gay, anti-Jew rhetoric. Reprtedly they would carry signs like GOD HATES ELIZABETH EDWARDS.
They get away with such nonsense under the guise of free speech rights. Two hundred military funerals have had them spewing their hate in attendance and they were sued by one father whose son had died in Afghanistan. They held such signs as THANK GOD FOR DEAD SOLDIERS. A jury awarded him eleven million dollars. They appealed and the award was reduced to six million. Appealing again, another court tossed the award out for “violating their free speech rights.”
There were people in attendance today to provide a buffer for the Edwards family. It turned out to be not such a big deal after all. Only five protesters appeared, but they got what they were really after, plenty of publicity.
