When I started reading THE NIGHT AND THE MUSIC, I wasn’t sure how I would take these stories. You see, I’m one of the few that have never read any of the Matthew Scudder novels. Go ahead, rap me over the head. I deserve it. It didn’t take but a couple of stories before I stopped off long enough to order the first two in the series. They should arrive in a couple of days. Like I really need more books to add to an ever growing TBR pile. I’ll survive though and eventually add them all, get them read. I believe I have some good stuff to look forward to down the road.
THE NIGHT AND THE MUSIC is a nice set of stories, eleven in all, one newly written for the collection, another had received only limited availability before this book. Not all of them are crime stories, but character pieces for some of the characters. They cover a long period of time, ranging back to Scudder’s police days in discussions with his wife Elaine, relating old cases and incidents.
A most satisfying collection that I devoured in just two sittings. It’s available in all ebook platforms, a print on demand paperback, and a limited edition leather bound hardcover from Otto Penzler. Something for everybody.
Highly recommended.
I’m looking forward to reading these. I’ve only read a couple of the Scudder books, and I really enjoyed them. I have some of them sitting in my TBR pile, as well, back at home. Speaking of that TBR pile, it is Sunday morning, and before I have to do some work for my job I am going to dig into a new book.

Ooh, this sounds like a very nice collection.
There’s a mistake on the Kindle edition. The story “The Merciful Angel of Death” doesn’t appear…instead, it’s a repeat of the previous story, “Batman’s Helper’s”. A fairly glaring error; I notified Amazon this date and they promised to fix this.
I’m not sure what’s up with your copy, Steve. Mine is correct.
