A butt-load this week from a combination of ARCs, some previously ordered that all floated in at the same time, and a few that I just HAD to have.

1: Getting Dunn(ARC) – Tom Schreck: TJ Dunn is a female MP in Iraq who enlisted after her father’s suicide and when her team is ambushed, she’s the lone survivor. Recovering from that mess, she learns her fiance committed suicide in Afghanistan. Back in the States, an emotional mess drifting from one job to another, she gets an anonymous phone telling her of a top military official engaged in trafficking heroin who arranged suicides to cover up his schemes. Revenge is suddenly an option she finds perfectly normal.

2: The Last Refuge(ARC) – Ben Coes: Israeli Special Forces commander Kohl Meir is kidnapped off New York streets and smuggled back to Iran for a show trial. He’d been there to recruit Dewey Andreas for a secret operation. Dewey is handed a photo of a secret nuclear bomb built by Iran with the words “Good-bye Tel Aviv” written on them. Dewey owes his life to Meir and plans to rescue his friend from one of the most secure prisons in Iran AND find the bomb before it’s deployed.

3: Crosscut(ARC) – Jude Hardin: the second Nicholas Colt thriller. Colt, founder of the huge southern rock band Colt .45, the band ended after a plane crash killed Colt’s wife and daughter, has been a PI, retired, and now has a small blues band that’s house band for a small club in Florida. An old girl friend comes down and asks him to find her brother. A uniformed cop who answered a call at a home, disappeared from there. His unit was there and two dead bodies in the house an grandmother and her daughter. The grandfather and granddaughter are missing. All that had been a year ago. He refuses at first, he’s remarried and they adopted a teenager, his license had lapsed, he was happy. Then the ex-girl friend mentioned the two bodies had had inverted crosses carved in their foreheads.

And suddenly he was interested.

The Harvest Angels were back, the militant arm of a religious cult that three years ago had kidnapped a teenage girl he was hired to find, killing her and leaving the cross carved into her. She’d been the sister of the teenager he and his second wife had adopted. He’d also learned that the long ago plane crash that killed his first family had been engineered by that same cult. You see, it was intolerable to them that a famous musician like him, a white one, be married to a black woman.

4: Dust and Shadow – Lindsay Faye; A Sherlock Holmes pastiche with Jack The ripper thrown in. This one was hard to resist, a hardcover for a couple of bucks.

5: Halo In Blood – John Evans

7: Halo In Brass – John Evans

8: The Taste of Ashes – Howard Browne: the four Paul Pine novels. Everyone knows, of course, that Evans was Howard Browne.

9: The Lone Ranger: Vendetta – Howard Hopkins: another of Moonstone Books’ short novels. Someone knows the Ranger’s secret and is killing off anyone who knew the Reid family. All to draw him out.

10: Beat To A Pulp: Round Two: David Cranmer’s massive new volume of short stories told in pulp style; I’m already read a few and am enjoying them tremendously.

11: The Last Days of Wolf Garnett – Clifton Adams: won the Spur award for best western novel. Love this cover.

12: King City(review copy) – Lee Goldberg: Goldberg’s new novel, soon to be started on.

13 Once A Lawman – Peter Brandvold: the third novel in his Lawman series, a freebie hard to resist.

14: Arkansas Smith 2: The Tumbleweed Trail – Jack Martin: THE TAINTED ARCHIVE master has a new book out. Another soon to be read.

15: Red River Desperadoes – James Reasoner: one of the author’s older books, third of his Powell’s Army line.

16: Warning Signs – Jan Christensen: a collection of short stories. A freebie.

17: The Grass Is Always Greener and other Stories – Sandra Balzo: a freebie that looks good.

18: Baby Shark – Robert Fate: another freebie.

19: Snake Skin – C J Lyons: A Lucy Guardino FBI thriller. A reasonably priced novel.

20: Credence: Foundation(review copy) – Marco Guarda: have started this one. It looks to be a combination SF/locked room mystery with Christian Trumaine investigating the murder of a couple in a heavily fortified bunker. Computer security measures say that no one has accessed the door in ninety-six hours, the police had to drill in to get entrance. Only the coroner says the bodies have only been dead about a third of that time. And it’s obviously murder.
