Hat tip to John Scalzi for pointing out this one. This type of fantasy tends to bore me quickly(think Terry Brooks’ Shannara, Jrdan’s Wheel of Time, Goodkind’s Sword of Truth, etc.). I usually bog down a few books into such a series, which feature large numbers of doorstops. Here I never made it out of the first one. I understand the TV series is pretty good, but I don’t do HBO.
Just as well I think.
I never had read the books though I did do about six novels of Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series until I realized it was just going nowhere. Seen the first season of the HBO production via the library and it is good.
But, yes, I pretty much feel the same way as you do.
It’s been a long time since I ventured into such a series. Used to love them, and don’t mind a good trilogy. I think the one that finally broke my back, though, and pretty much ended my reading of such things, is the Robert Jordan series. It just went on, and on, and on, and. . . .
I have the George RR Martin books, except for the most recent, as I was collecting them as they’d show up used at the local shop, but I haven’t read them. I did watch the first season of the HBO series on DVD and loved it.
Thanks, Randy. I needed a good laugh today.
I liked the Lord of the Rings, of course, and then read the Donaldson 1st and 2nd trilogy, and I tried a couple of others but quickly lost interest. at this point, I don’t really see myself getting involved in anything like one of these series.
HBO’s GAME OF THRONES is fantastic and I am not a fantasy lover. I am sure the books would be too long for me, but the series just races along. I need a cast of characters to keep up though So many of them.
I loved the video! And I do find myself losing interest the longer I have to wait. One can only re-read so many times.
