What were the editors of the New Yorker thinking?
The cover that depicts the Obamas as terrorists in the White House IS offensive. They meant it as satirical. Really? I think they are over estimating some people’s ability to get the joke.
Both the Obama and McCain campaigns are rightly calling it offensive. But you know somewhere in the GOP, people are chortling in glee. They know that some people will believe it’s real because there are already people that believe Obama is in league with the terrorists, as stupid as all that sounds.
Was the New Yorker staff deliberately trying to damage Obama’s campaign? That’s exactly what will come of this ridiculous cover. How much will this hurt. Who knows? Probably not a lot. But the Democrats are already reeling from some of Obama’s reversal of positions on some things since he won the nomination. I’ve seen at other blogs people saying the would hold their noses and still vote Democratic at election time. But no more donations. I saw one prominent blogger say he regretted the donation he’d already given during the primaries.
Obama doesn’t need any more bad press. He’s not the fair-haired boy, so to speak, that he once was. I still think he’s the best choice available. But I once thought he was the best thing that could happen to this country in a long time.
No more.
